The Maynard's Experience

Maynard's was established in 1947 by Al Maynard.   Following his service as a Navy Lieutenant in World War II, Maynard worked for Maxwell Brothers Furniture in Rome, Georgia.  After working in Rome for a year, he returned to Belton (his wife's home town) to open Maynard's Furniture.  The first store was 5,000 square feet, and was located on the square in Belton.  Following the war, new merchandise was hard to get, so he started out selling second hand furniture and appliances.

As the business grew, he began offering better quality furniture.  He moved to the company's present location on the Anderson-Belton Highway in 1952, and changed the name to Maynard's Wayside Furniture.  The new store had 10,000 square feet.   Soon he dropped appliances and added carpet and window treatments to the merchandise mix.  A decorator was hired to offer customers design service.

Regional newspaper, radio and TV advertising was added, and customers began driving from Anderson, Clemson, Greenwood and Greenville.  By the mid 1960's, the wayside theme was disappearing and the company's name changed to Maynard's of Belton.

Over the years several additions have been made to the Belton location, which now includes 25,000 square feet of showroom and an additional 20,000 square foot warehouse.   The company continues to be family owned and operated.  Rex Maynard, Al's second son, joined the company following his graduation from Wofford College in 1969.   Rex has served as company president since 1977. The third generation of Maynard family ownership and management is now involved with the company.  Rex’s sons also attended Wofford and began working at Maynard’s following their graduation…Alderman in 1999 and Blake in 2004.

Maynard's has expanded several times in its history with the following second locations:
  • Maynard's Colonial Shop in Highlands, N.C. from 1960-1969
  • Maynard's Country Manor on I-85 in Piedmont, S.C. from 1971-1977
  • Maynard's Porch, Pool & Leather Furniture in Taylors, S.C. from 1982-1985
The company purchased Country Manor Furniture in 2000, and reopened the 18,000 square foot store as Maynard's in March, 2001 after extensive remodeling.  With the opening of the second location, the company name was changed to Maynard's Home Furnishings.  The company services customers within a 100 mile radius in three states, and has 19 employees.

The company's mission is to offer it's customers a large selection of quality home furnishings at fair prices, combined with excellent customer service.  Maynard's abides by the philosophy of John Willis, Jr., a long-time retail merchant at Willis Wayside in Norfolk, Virginia.  Willis believed that "In the conduct of one's business, there should be no compromise with the fundamental principles of fair and honest treatment of the public, and there can be no substitute for quality and value." He often said "It is more important to have the respect of people with whom you do business than to make a sale, for a transaction cannot be profitable unless the buyer and seller both profited thereby."
